Final 23 Things Blog Post

After learning 23 things about Web 2.0, I realize there are a lot of web applications I know nothing about. It was so enlightening to find out about sites where I can post pictures and sort my favorite sites. I think the most useful thing I learned about was the word processing web sites. I had heard about them, but never got around to seeing how really helpful they are. I would definitely take a class like this again. If someone mentions bloglines or flicker, at least I know what they are talking about.

Audio books

Wow. I listened to the first chapter of Jayne Anne Krentz's All Night Long. Years ago I checked into the audio book collection, but only classic novels were available. I will always love the printed work better than an audio, but it is nice to know I have another option now. I do listen to audio books in the car, and the audio books are available for CD burning during the check-out period. I'll have to do that one of these days.

podcast

http://www.loc.gov/podcasts/bookfest/podcast_burns.html How is this? I copied the shortcut for a Ken Burns interview on the Library of Congress Page. I found several interesting interviews with authors on this site. Ken Burns is one of my favorite documentary authors. The instructions said to add the RSS feed to the bloglines. I did it, and now I have over 10 RSS feeds on my bloglines.

YouTube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWqCReOXjZM This is a video of Ernie singing the Rubber Ducky Song. I was trying to find an old song from my childhood, 'Playmate', but there were too many videos using 'Playmate' or 'Play Mate' as tags. My next try for 'Rubber Ducky' was a lot easier. I can see the benefits of using YouTube in the library. For example, seeing an animal in the wild, rather than in still photos would be more educational for a student doing a report. Or finding an old childhood song and actually hearing it, rather than reading the lyrics is much more satisfying.

Lulu

I looked at the award winning site for books, Lulu. It is set up with tabs, which makes it easy to locate something. Unfortunately, I would need a lot of time to become familiar with all the offerings. Like most sites with a lot of information (like the PBC library site), the more you use it, the easier it is to find something. There are still things I am discovering about the library web site. Maybe some day I'll have time to explore all those other interesting sites.

Zoho

Wow. Do you see the test document I published? I love the idea of writing documents online. My computer at home doesn't have word and I always have to use wordpad. Now I know I can use Zoho! This is going to save me a lot of problems trying to figure out which program to use to open a message. Thanks 23 things!

test

This is a new document writer I am trying out.  Can you read it?  Can you see the picture?  If you can, I did this right!

pbcls wiki

I checked out the library wiki. This was interesting. I added my favorite vacation place (did not bother with pictures, though) and added this blog as a favorite blog. This was a pretty easy experience.

wiki

Well, I looked at some Wiki sites recommended by 23 things. I can see the best use for these are with a group of people with similar interests. In the example a group of friends were planning a trip. This I can see as a great use for Wikis. I can even see this as a great resource for event planning, however, I have issues with sites edited by the public. Not that there are any guarantees. The general public may have more knowledge than an individual, but I see so many chances for error. As long as the sites are monitored for accuracy, I guess I can see the attraction.

library 2.0

After reading 5 articles suggested by the Web 2.0 workshop I thought I would post my feelings about them. Well, I agree that libraries need to keep up with technology. Any source of data should be Incorporated into the public offerings. The 'Away from the “icebergs”' selection was the only article I really enjoyed. The other offerings read like a library technical manual strictly for other librarians. I could understand them, but I can't say I enjoyed reading them.

Technorati

Technorati search site for blogs has been an eye opening experience. I never suspected how many blogs are out there, or how many I would be interested in reading. There was a blog listed under the search for www.pbclibrary.org which mentioned the readers advisory. When I clicked on the blog, a message appeared that that page does not exist. Too bad.

delicious

The delicious web site for compiling favorite web sites seems a great idea. If ever the computer crashes, all the favorites will be saved. And I found several web sites saved by other people who had the same interests as me.

webfeat

Ok, I put in Boca Raton and FL as the key words and checked off business. Wow, there were a lot of magazine with Boca. Not a single book, though. I viewed a few magazine articles at random, but not all of the articles would appear. I would get the message 'You have logged out successfully. Where can we take you?'. I guess not all articles are accessable to the public.

library thing

The library thing is working for me. I can add titles easily. I'll have to experiment to get more info listed for each item. My library thing is careyb23things, too.

RSS 2nd try

Still having that same problem!!!

image maker

Well, you can see that I am having trouble getting my image to post. I'll try again later. :(

RSS

Well, bloglines is an interesting web site. I had no difficulty signing in to the site, but it only took a few of my picks to start. I had to go back and add more sites individually. Not hard, but I don't know why they did not come up to start. It will be interesting to see if I actually use the site. It may be just the thing to save time, I hope.

technology

The Flicker web site illustrates how people love to share their experiences with others. No longer are we in the era of 'look at my photo album'. It is now 'take a look at my on-line pictures, here is my group address'. If you are not connected to the internet, you have no idea how much information you are missing.

blogs

My feelings on blogs. When I am having difficulty working something out, it helps to write it out. I don't feel the same desire to write when everything is working well.
The idea of lifelong learning is a new concept to me. As an avid reader, I guess I am already a lifeling learner, but I tend to read fiction. If I read more technical manuals ( vista, web 2.0, etc), will I be a better learner, or is fiction just as important as non-fiction? Obviously, I choose to believe whatever I read will enrich me.
